As part of a university brief we were each assigned a different song, and had to create a short, 10-20 second animation based on the song we had been given. The song I was given was Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, by Daft Punk.

However, as part of the brief we had to follow a strict set of rules. Firstly, we had to listen to the song and think of three words which describe it; my words were motion, mechanical, and repetitive. Next, we had to create a number of photographs, hand drawn illustrations, and digitally manipulated images, which relate to the three words. These pictures were then to used to create the animation. Our lecturers stressed that when creating the images and putting them together, we were not to consider what the finished animation would look like. They wanted the three words and the pictures we created to dictate what the animation would look like, they did not want preconceived notions of how the end result should look. This was something that a lot of people in the group, including myself, struggled with. My first idea involved rayograms of toy robots which were dancing to the music, but my lecturers dismissed this because they said I had a preconceived idea of how I wanted the end result to look. The point of the brief was to show us that when we have to work to strict rules we can often surprise ourselves with the results.
